Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). 2019-nCOV is a new strain that has not been previously identified. However, due to a general susceptibility of coronaviruses to chemical disinfection, strategies are available to help prevent transmission and infection. Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, especially before and after food preparation, before eating, after toilet use and after handling animals or animal waste, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
Appropriate cleaning and disinfection strategies are recommended to help control the spread of dangerous pathogens, such as the 2019-nCOV.
